Seventy-five years ago, a family of three disappeared from their remote English home. Blood was left smeared all over the floors and walls, but despite an extensive search, their bodies were never found. Now the house is ready to kill again. On the run from his creditors, Owen Richards moves his wife and daughter out to the same house. Despite the strange portrait of an old man in the hallway, and the faint ticking sound coming from the walls, he insists that the house offers a perfect chance for them to start afresh. Before their first night in their new home is over, however, Owen and his family are going to come face-to-face with the diabolical creation of a long-dead old man. Deadly dangers lurk in every room, and the constant ticking sound is just the first hint of a much greater monstrosity. No-one has ever managed to survive the house, or to outsmart its creator. And beneath the house, a horrific mechanism predicts every move the Richards family might make as they desperately try to escape. The Blood House is a horror novella about three people trapped in a nightmare, and about an old man who was willing to stop at nothing in his quest to be remembered as a great genius.

then you will probably like this novella. I absolutely agree with some reviewers who said that the graphic and bloody violence and gore is unusual for an Amy Cross book. It is very violent and very bloody, and the Genius behind it all is extremely evil. If you read the book with horror and suffering in mind, this book delivers it in spades. It is graphic, horrible, bloody, and violent, and nobody is left unscathed. It truly is a dark and horrible tale.

I, however, read and interpreted this in a way that did not disturb me. I am a huge fan of evil and gory stories along the lines of "Tales From the Crypt" and other sorts of horror shows with bloody and gory episodes, and maybe it was just my mood, but I read this with that sort of story-telling in my mind. I was not disturbed by the violence because I expected it. I was not disturbed by the blood and gore because I expected it. Every character except for Helen (the wife and mother) is so unlikable (or in Owen's case, boring and predictable) that pondering their fates did not trouble me. The Genius who built the house was so over-the-top malevolent that nothing he did really surprized me as far as his terrible intentions went. The moments that could be seen as heart-warming and hopeful could easily be seen as cheesy depending upon the mood and expectations of the reader.

The ending made me laugh. It was an ending that I should have perhaps expected, but I didn't. I laughed! It was absolutely horrible and yet perfect, in my opinion. If some aspects of this story were tweaked to be made more obviously a dark and gallows sort of horror/humor, I could easily see it being perfectly adapted for a revival "Tales From the Crypt."

Tldr: This book is dark, depressing, and gory. But if your mood permits, you may enjoy it immensely in a way that Ms. Cross probably did not intend.

The Blood House Amy Cross Books Reviews

If it's to good to be true, it usually is and this is no different. Once the decision has been made to move, either voluntarily or not, you are too tired to question oddities that you stumble across. This should be a lesson learned to question everything right then and if in doubt, get out. The brilliance behind it is amazing, and terrifying.
This was a great short story by Amy Cross! I started it yesterday in the wee hours of the morning and finished it in the wee hours of this morning. I had a hard time putting it down. It is not about ghost or hauntings, it about a house that kills people that live in it.

This book is not for the faint of heart - very graphic and gory. It grabs your attention right away and stays with you through the entire book. It also stays with you long after you put it down. I enjoyed the book so much that I am going to start reading other books by Amy Cross and I am going to add her to my horror author lists. This was definitely a five star read.
Family looks for a place to start over, moves into a 'Too good to be true' rental that's not been lived in for 75 years. Bad things happen. If you like that kind of horror, and like the idea of a house that kills people, this may be the story for you. The premise is kind of weak, and the characters pretty generic, but once you get past that it gets interesting, in the 'well I didn't see that coming' kind of way. Also, there is no real time wasted, no weeks of things getting subtly stranger and more horrifying. Nope, pretty much goes from idle to 5th gear, so you don't spend chapters wondering why they don't just leave. 3 out of 5 sharpened blades.
The Blood House is another well written book by Amy Cross. She was recommended to me by a friend so I started to purchase her books, and am happy I did.
Many horror stories have taken place in houses, but this one takes a different spin on it.The plot is interesting with some nice twists hidden within. The pace of the book is just right, never feels dragged out nor rushed through the story. Those are things I appreaciate a lot.

Owen is an interesting character. He seems rather shady at first but once you read into the story he is actually very intelligent and likable! Sadly his daughter did the reverse in my book. Initially she was a typical teenager, a very smart one at that (must be from dad), but as the story continues I start to dislike her more and more. She just doesn't seem to listen when she is told by her parents and eventually drives me nuts with her behavior.

If you enjoy a good horror story read this one, you will like it.
My favorite 'horror' fiction is ghost stories. Just recently, with the slow demise of zombie novels, ghost novels are becoming the big thing at the moment. I enjoy Ron Ripley, Patrick Logan, Ambrose Ibsen and now Amy Cross. I have not read much ghost fiction from female authors as their often tend to become somewhat romantic either with a ghost hunting partner or the ghost is some sad being who was cruelly murdered and is pretty pisssed off until she or he is released from their torment. Sorry for being long winded but I wanted to give some context to my review. Amy Cross does not mess about. She does not write 'romantic' ghost stories. Her stories go straight for the jugular. She also comes up with fascinating premises - houses that are rotten for various reason (and she makes each haunted house story quite unique and that is helped by believable characters). The Blood house has a premise that is quite unique and gripped me from the start. The house is not so much haunted as deadly. I loved this book (having read some of her other books) and can say two things with certainty - this is a terrific read, and Amy Cross is a terrific author, giving me exactly the ghost stories I love.

PS I am NOT a shill, I am just very happy to find another great ghost story writer.
